ATHENA.

MEET OUR FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE WEEK Nabeel Abed.

Fab style 101 WITH ATHENA meets NABEEL ABED,south african fashion photographer as he tells us more about fashion photography and the intriguing part of it,know more about fashion photography and learn how to speak through the eye of photography.
Its FAB STYLE 101,here are our FAB questions:
*WHO IS NABEEL ABED:
NABEEL: Nabeel Abed is a qualified and experienced fashion photographe from Durban South Africar, ive worked on projects such as the Miss India South Africa and Miss India worldwide pageants, this is obviously where my photography career started 7 years ago,the pageants opened up many doors to me,also working with the MTN Durban fashion week, allowed me get my name into industry and move forward locally and internationally.Aside from being a professional photographer i am also a recruitment specialist,English language instructor and events producer, and in a way i am lucky because each of the professions im involved in is related to each other in some way or the other.

*WHAT SHOULD PHOTOGRAPHER CONSIDER FOR PHOTOSHOOTS AND RUNWAY PHOTOGRAPHY?
NABEEL: There are many things photographers need to consider when on a shoot, technically you need to make sure you have the correct equipment for the job, aside from this is the creativity, because no publication wants the same shots all the time, they want something different and that is why being creative and original is very important.Aside from the actual shoots the other factor that matters is communication with the team that you would be working with, there needs to be respect and understanding with each team member so that any shoot or business discussions may flow in the manor that it should.

*WHAT MEANING SHOULD PICTURES GIVE?WHAT MESSAGE SHOULD IT PORTRAY?
NABEEL: Pictures to me are made, and they should be made in such a way that just by looking at an image, you should feel the emotion radiating through the model. It needs to tell a story.

*HOW HAS LIFE BEING A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER BEEN and IT INFLUENCES ON YOUR STYLE OF WORK?
NABEEL: The fashion industry is all live for, being a fashion photographer the industry becomes your life,it consumes you,you want more of it everyday, the fact that you are working with all these creatives every day inspires you to better and push harder to try and be the best.
My style of work which aside from focusing on fashion, brings in a lot of photo manipulation as well,to the industry its something fresh and vibrant where by a lot of the younger photographers would look to,my play of colour and contrast and style of lighting has been much respected and has given rise to many younger talents tryinh their hand out and doing the same.

*TIPS ON GETTING A GLAMOUROUS SHOT
NABEEL:
*Make up and hair should be in order
*posture and pose is important
*Be comfortable with yourself, when your comfortable with your body it will always shine through,no matter what shape or size you are.
* being able to connect with the camera, dont be afraid of the camera,if you are afraid it will definitely show.
*Being confident is key,You should always think that youre the hottest girl on the planet.

*TELL US MORE AbOUT FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY?
NABEEL: Fashion photography is one of the most demanding forms of photography out there, its fast paced, challenging and competitive ,and ure always in for a surprise in fashion,on the other hand its fun and exciting, when i talk of fashion photography guys think its the best job ever coz you are photographing women all the time,we also do photograph men women think is glamorous, sure it is a very glamorous, fun and rewarding job.Shooting early mornings and late afternoons is great...waking up for earl morning shoots at the beginning but you get accustomed to it and everything thereafter just flows naturally.

*WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS AS A PHOTOGRAHER?
NABEEL:I look up to many photographers,South African greats such Peter Magubane and Ranjith Kally,Overseas i look at works from Nigel Barker in USA, As well as chase jarvis, and over in India i look a lot at the works of Atul Kasbekar and DabbooRatnani.

*WHAT IT LIKE WORKING FAR fROM YOUR COUNTRY:
NABEEL: Working away from South Africa was tough in the beginning but thanks to social media and technology it has helped me carry out my tremendously and of course there’s the fun part of flying so often for work, anything new at first is hard, but then it becomes easier as the days go by.
*WHAT Is THE BEST CAMERA,YOU RECOMMEND FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS:
NABEEL:I don’t think that there is a “best” camera out there for pics, people have different taste, some prefer Nikon and some prefer canon, others may prefer a hasselblad, ive always preferred Canon. But again it isn’t always about the camera i believe its about the Photographer as it is the photographer who makes the image, the camera is just a tool, sure the camera does have a purpose but if you are going to look for “the best” camera that will do everything for you then you cannot call yourself a professional photographer or a photographer at all.

Today you will see many professional photographers experimenting with mobile photography (photos shot and edited on your smartphone)...but we will leave that topic for another day....
*WHAT YOUR ADVICE TO UP and COMING PHOTOGRAPHER?
NABEEL: My message to up and coming photographers is that you only get better with every shot that you take, shoot as much as you can, don’t be afraid to try something new,if it doesn’t work at least you know it doesn’t work, and most important,NEVER allow anybody to tell you that you don’t have what it takes, because you do have what it takes,u just gotta dig deep down and bring out the photographer in you to prove to everybody that you can be who you set urself out to be.

The Event Planner Lifestyle Boost: Take Care of Yourself While Planning Successful Events.

this article features a collection of tips and exercise routines to keep you healthy while planning events.

The traditional image of the event professional is that of a person constantly on the phone, drinking coffee, running around fixing problems and making sure everything goes to plan.
The levels of stress an event professional has to suffer are incredible. In 2012 CareerCast made it the 6th most stressful job of the year.
Stress levels this high are not good for you. I tried to give some help with your soul and the response was overwhelming.
I decided to further investigate the topic. I did a search on Twitter with a few keywords and got further confirmation of an alarming phenomenon.
It is very common to find event professional complaining from being tired, delegating nutrition to energy drinks and coffee for days or spending hours behind a computer planning their event.

Why Is Nobody Talking About It?

While everybody in the industry (me included) seems concentrated on giving you more things to do, read or plan, nobody seems to care about the body that keeps everything going.
The objective of this article is of course to give you some tips on where to start improving your food intake and exercise while planning events.
Another important objective is to stimulate the discussion of this topic in the industry. I want to see the same level of articles talking about improving working lifestyle as those discussing social media for events.

Who Will Give You Advice?

I am possibly the last person on earth entitled to write an article of such importance and delicacy.
I asked Dani Stevens of Fitness, Food and Style to write it for me. She is a blogger on the topic, full time mum of 4 and shares her passion for healthy heating and lifestyle on her amazing blog. She also managed to get the attention of Sir Richard Branson to raise awareness on the initiative The Ride to Conquer Cancer.
I am sure we can all relate to what Dani does and are willing to listen to what she has to say. I asked her to give us targeted advice depending on different times of the usual event planning and management cycle.
Before we start I also want to make sure that you take the next article as a stimulus to further investigate the topic.
You need to consult your doctor if you feel something is not working with your lifestyle and before modifying your diet or starting exercise practice.
If this article will help you to have that conversation then mission will be accomplished.
I’ll pass the keyboard to Dani, so she can inspire you to improve your working lifestyle.

Dani’s Healthy Lifestyle tips for Event Professionals

Food

It’s super imperative to be prepared and arm yourself with healthy snacks when attending certain events (or traveling). You won’t be tempted to snack on those “junk food” type of foods or lollies being served during the event.
I was a sucker eating those min ties or skittles! Preparation is key to anything, like you plan your event you need to plan your food for the day. Here’s just an example of what I take to events (I also bring my small cooler bag and utilize any near by grocery stores if I am traveling interstate).
Staying Overnight in a Hotel
Breakfast – Always opt for the fresh fruit salad and muesli range. Avoid the greasy bacon, hash browns and pastries buffet.
Morning snack – pack a handful of almonds and a piece of your favorite fruit (or dried fruits) and stay clear of those pastries (loaded with trans fat and sugar) platters.
Lunch – Opt for the salads, meats and fresh fruit platters
Afternoon snack – stick to your fresh fruit & vegetables platters
Dinner – Steamed fish or grilled chicken with a salad or vegetables
Leaving From Home to the Event
Breakfast – Green smoothie on the go (whizz a handful of spinach, 1 banana, preferred milk & protein powder add a drizzle of honey with 1 tsp chia seeds)
Morning snack – pack a handful of almonds and a piece of your favorite fruit (or dried fruits). Snack on the fruit platters at the event or bring a small cooler bag to stock up your snacks
Lunch – Stick to your fresh sandwich and fruit & vegetable platters
Afternoon snack – plain yogurt with fresh fruit
Dinner – Your choice of a protein meat, chicken or fish served with vegetables and salad
Being healthy takes a lot of commitment and if you can’t pack your snacks or a cooler bag then you will be like I used to be and suffer from a junk food hangover after each event!
Having said that you are also entitled to indulge, so do it in moderation when it comes to sweets and alcohol. We are human after all.

EXAMPLE

Egg pizza recipe

Ingredients
3 eggs
1 tomato
handful of chopped spinach and parsley leaves
1 diced red onion
handful of kalamata olives
1/2 cup of crumbled feta cheese
(use whatever vegetables you have in your fridge eg: mushrooms, capsicums etc…

Method
Gently fry onions, tomato, spinach and olives. Then quickly beat up the eggs, add the crumbled feta and pour on top of mixture. Then place under the grill until cooked. Real fast, super simple and extremely flavoursome.
I just use whatever ingredients I have left over in the fridge. You can use your imagination and put whatever ingredients!
Oatmeal pancakes recipe and steps found in the link.

In Conclusion

I believe this great article by Dani will help you to kickstart a better lifestyle while planning amazing events.
If you have any questions, you can either comment here on the blog or get in touch with us on https://www.facebook.com/fashionfreakstv?ref=br_tf

Exercise

I know from my personal experience of working 15 years in the corporate space, running around and scheduling customer meetings, sitting at my desk, presenting at forums and attending presentations etc… it gave me poor posture and the long periods of sitting and standing increased my risk of pain, fatigue and a range of health problems. We need to pay more attention to the way we sit and stand for how long to reduce this likelihood.
Things we need to avoid are slouching shoulders whilst sitting, soft/squashy chairs and always ensure our spine is in neutral position, no slouching and have your back against the support of your chair. Make sure your chair is at the right height to allow your thighs to be at the right angles to your body.
When standing for an entire day, try and sit when you can if not ensure you take time to do a few lunges and squats (maybe when you are in the bathroom so you don’t have the entire events crew checking you out!) better still tell everyone to join in!!! ☺

How You Dress Says a Lot About You
and may affect your life more than you think

How you dress says about you. Have you considered what kind of image you are presenting to the world? Is it elegant?
Quite recently, I've been getting quite a number of small modelling jobs. I've done work for Estee Lauder and Clarins, been approached by online retailers and high end hair salons to do some modelling for them, as well as little modelling jobs for independent photographic and film societies. I've also attended a society event, and as a result, got my picture requested and published on their magazine and on their website (I still feel like a fraud). That is quite strange for me because I've been getting more attention about my looks in my 30s than in my 20s.

I've done a bit of commercial work when I was a child, in real estate television advertisements, educational magazines, and in my early twenties, commercial work for fashion magazines. Commercial work simply means posing to illustrate a story or sell something, and not the glamorous kind that you see on runway or fashion tv with all the top models in the world.

I've been wondering, has it been due to the way I've been dressing?

While I enjoy fashion, and even considered a career in fashion (opening my own store and designing dresses and gowns - I actually studied under a gown designer for 2 years) at one point, I've since realized that I only like 'elegant fashion'. I'm not into trends and couldn't care less what the fashion leading giants were doing. Thus, I felt to follow a career in fashion was not true to myself.

However, I feel the way I've dressed had somewhat led to more opportunities.

I wouldn't say I'm the best dresser or the most elegant, but I try dress as appropriate to the occasion and as elegantly as possible. Some say it is because I'm considered beautiful in my country and culture, but I'd also add to that while I grew up having more attention than most girls, there were some very beautiful and more beautiful than me who grew up alongside and didn't get any opportunities that I had.

When I say, "how you dress says much about you" I mean more than just putting on clothes. It is also how you wear your hair, do your make up, carry yourself that says a lot about you. It tells people what you think about yourself. Sometimes, people can also gauge what type of personality and character you are and even what you think about men or sex.

Neither would I say I'm an extremely vain person, in actuality, I'm pretty lazy and wouldn't wear make up if I didn't have to. I almost never comb my hair (thankfully, I have silky asian hair that would never get tangled even if I didn't comb it).

Though I'll admit here that I like to look pretty and appreciate the compliments I receive. I am aware of my own shortcomings, but I also know what I look good in. Some of the pretty girls that didn't get as much attention after they left school is because they were used to being called pretty and never made an effort to switch skincare, or learn how to put on make up properly or present themselves in the best way.

I was recently invited to be a model for an aesthetics beauty seminar. I had no idea what I would be doing, and just went along as a favor to my friend who was leaving for Sweden that night, thus who wouldn't be there. She sounded busy so I didn't ask her too many questions on what to wear or how to look.

I was told to be there at 6 pm, and so I arrived at 545 pm, allocating more time in case I get lost (knowing me) and being punctual for me is important.

I wore conservative make up, which means, concealling all the flaws like pimples and eyebags and having a natural eye with a little bit of eyeliner, and a natural blush with very little lipstick. I didn't know what kind of beauty conference, but I know beauty usually means no crazy eyeshadow or smokey eye effect.

I didn't know how to dress for this event. In the end I wore a silky white dress with prints and gold buttons, I just tied my hair in a low ponytail, since I figured they would want to use my face.

When I got there, there was no one, so I sat around reading high-end magazines (they were the only ones available). As time went by, doctors after doctors (both male and female) came into the office and walked up to me and introduced themselves. They will then ask me, "Where do you practice?". I was wondering why there were so many doctors and all asking me the same question. I had to explain, "No, I'm not a doctor. I'm here to help a friend." After a while, I almost felt embarassed not to be a doctor!

It was a beauty seminar for doctors in aesthetics beauty and cosmetic surgery! It was presented by a famous Korean doctor, whom I met much later on.

Later on, another group of people came into the office, and right away I could tell they were not doctors. I think everybody could too. Some were beauty PR executives, bosses of cosmetic companies and then...the other nose models.

The beauty public relations executives were dressed very fashionably (a little loud for the hospital), and the other nose models was pretty casual and almost sloppy for a beauty seminar. In the holding room, the whole non-doctor gang repeatedly said the same thing to me, "I thought you were a doctor!"

I was literally a specimen to show doctors as one of the types of nose, how to improve on, or what to do in certain cosmetic procedures or full on plastic surgery.

I found that hilarious.

I didn't feel offended when the big group of (well-dressed) doctors crowded round me and asking the leading Korean surgeon how to improve my nose. My nose was drawn on, and poked, tugged repeatedly. After all, I thought it was interesting to know how my nose fared!
My improvements? My nose bridge could be higher and the end of my nose could be sharper.

But I was really pleased to hear that the Korean doctor saying that I had a pretty good nose and not much needs to be done. He might be saying that I look 'natural' - we all know that most sharp noses on Korean beauties are mostly not natural.

Now, I'm not here to blow my horn in any way, but just to illustrate how you dress says a lot about you. I'm also NOT SAYING you have to dress to look like a doctor, or that I dressed better than the beauty PR/executives or the nose models. I'm just saying that people casually judge you by the way you dress.

So perhaps the thought to leave you with is,  how would you like others to think about you?
When I was younger, I was often mistaken to be from a very wealthy family (definitely not). Even now, people seem to assume I have no money problems and have lots of spare. Except those of my friends who are way up there in terms of financial and social status....they know I can't keep up! These moneyed people can also tell right away that I'm not one of them! Haha.

I was also assumed to be the youngest and most loved child of the family (perhaps that's a way of saying that I looked like a princess? Which may or may not be a good thing)

SO...would you rather be mistaken for a doctor or a beauty PR executive? (This is personal preference - it is okay to want to be mistaken for a PR executive ).

Maybe it is important to consider about how you are presenting yourself to the world, if that is something that matters to you. I'm not asking you to put up a facade, but you know, sometimes the way you present yourself will lead you to other opportunities you not have had, for love, career or friendships.

Just a thought.

BE A WOMAN OF ELEGANT BE POISE

Poise

What is Poise?
How to be a Woman of

Secrets of An Elegant Poise - The History of Poise

elegant poise
Something delicate how these women stood..
About a few generations ago, every well-bred young girl was given posture lessons.
Today we send our young daughters for dance lessons, enter them into beauty pageants, in hope that they will grow up to be graceful young women rather than prima ballerinas.
Have you ever wondered why few women who are poised today?
Maybe it's because we do not place values on posture, manners and behaviour as much as before.
I decided to research the subject.

Which elegant woman was poised?

Audrey Hepburn had it.
Coco Chanel had it.
Bree Van de Kamp in Desperate Housewives.
Ashley Judd in De-lovely.
Melinda Clarke as Julie Cooper in The O.C.
Blair Waldorf & Lily Van der woodsen in Gossip girl both had it.
Wing Cheng, wife of Ip Man in the movie Ip Man.
elegant poise
I'm inspired by the way they maintained their poise when insulted or when they are caught in an embarrassing situation.

So what is the definition of Poise?

Poise is composure and dignity of manner. It is a graceful and elegant bearing in a person.
I believe elegance and poise comes together. Though poise is a fruit of elegance. In other words, you have to learn to be elegant first.
You be poised without necessarily being elegant. It is just like, you can be composed even though you've walked into an important meeting late, looking disheveled.
elegant poise
Poised at Breakfast at Tiffany's
From my study, I feel being poised is not just having composure, but dignity as well. A poised person has elegant mannerisms. Her movements of her body...have a lot of style. The way she walks, talks, carries herself is fluid and gentle, yet strong and purposeful.
You sometimes can't take your eyes off a woman with poise. You can't help but watch as she gets out of the car, smiles at the doorman, and say thank you. She walks to the front door already opened for her. She pauses, stands and her eyes lit up as she walks towards the person waiting for her. She is unaware of the impact of her presence at the atmosphere of the room.

My Favourite Quote About Poise

I came across this passage in an article once, I liked it so much I saved it, though I can't remember where it was from. It embodies the essence of poise.
"I almost ran straight into her in the lobby of a French hotel. I turned a corner, and she was coming the other way, walking quickly, surrounded by a pack of photographers and journalists. She seemed oblivious to the frenzy, to the babble and camera flash: the expression on her face was remote and introspective. This became an abiding image for me of celebrity containment, of self-protected glamour wrapped in a bubble of poise."

The opposite of Poise? You can spot a mile away.
Clumsy, awkward, clunky.

How then, do you acquire poise?

Study the lessons of elegance so that you will maintain an attitude of grace and composure.
And definitely, improve your posture! Posture plays a big part in the visual element of poise.

Remember the definition of Poise

Poise is composure and dignity of manner and graceful and elegant bearing in a person
It is definitely a much more achievable goal when we break it down like that. :)
I hope you like my article on What is Poise? How To Be A Woman With Poise. Secrets of An Elegant Poise.

FAB STYLE 101/FASHIONFREAKS MEETS UTI Nwachukwu

FAB STYLE 101 meets UTI NWANCHUKWU,a musician yeah if you don't know now you do,presenter, model, actor, you see him on the movie blockbuster and you love him,he is quite the entertainment and.
fashion industry package.
Fun,handsome, every girls loves the guy with the clean dreads....and guys wanna be like him CUTE with the smile of a sparkle god.
It's UTI.........yeah you watched it ,yeah! Big Brothers Africa season 5-Big Brother All stars winner,GIAMA Best New Actor 2012,USA.
Here are some question FAB STYLE 101 had for him and believe me he cracked a lot LOL,have fun with his intriguing answers....
*WHAT ARE YOUR CAN'T DO WITHOUT COLOURS?
UTI SAYS: Ahhhhh. I love all colours o. But as a guy man...BLACK and BLUE of course and deep shade of Red and deep shade of Yellow.

*WHAT IS YOUR KNOWLEDGE ON AFRICA's FASHION?AND WHAT'S YOUR RATINGS ON NIGERIA'S?
UTI SAYS:I think Africa's fashion is really unique! We have really interesting and mind blowing fabrics and patterns and colours! Very dramatic! Very entertaining! Our style alone tells a story!
Then NIGERIANS have upped the ante here !! We have successfully combined urban and rural fashion to create a new phenomenon in its own!! Nigerian fashion/style is truly a breath of fresh air and can hold its own in the fashion scene in AnY part of the world!  Love it!!!! And will patronise it forever. Look in my closet. I can count how many foreign pieces I have. Can't count the Nigerian ones.

*YOUR STYLE TURNOFF's WOULD BE?
UTI: Doing too much of anything. Be it accessories colours or fit...then exposing too much skin weather you are male or female lol.

*DEFINE YOUR STYLE IN ONE WORD?
UTI SAYS:SLICK!

*WHAT YOUR TAKE ON MAKE-UP FOR GUYS?
UTI: What do you mean by makeup? Like powder and lipstick and all that?!!  BIG NO NO!!! Except u have to be on camera. Then u have no choice...but as a guy, face powder and lip balm is all you should allow any makeup artist put on you before a shoot! Lol

*FAVORITE DESIGNERS AND WHY HE/SHE?
UTI SAYS: I have favourite designers!!!!!!
Because,my style is eclectic!!  MAI ATAFO MADE ME LOVE SUITS AND SHOWED ME THAT I COULD PULL OF A BOND LOOK ANYDAY ANYTIME. hehehe.  Yomi Casual  also made me fall in love with native attires all over again!  The embroidery the mix and match of ankara , the fit! The prestigious royal looks..ahhh Yomi is true Nigerian! My New discovery is EMMY KASBITS!! He is an amazing young and TALENTED daring designer !! He plays with colours and patterns just the way I love them!!! Watch out!!!!

*WHAT KINNA STYLE WOULD UTI BE FOUND IN FOR A DINNER DATE?
UTI SAYS: Either in a full on Tuxedo Or very very relaxed couture dress shirt tucked into fitted dress pants and complimented with nice pointy dress shoes. 😁

*MENTION FASHION ARTICLES: That is a must have for people who wanna dress like you?
UTI SAYS: Hahaha. patent shoes, accessories (beads, hand accessories , glasses) and OF COURSE the dreadlocks!! Lol. Compulsorily, you need your Blazers and ankara !

*BETWEEN LADIES AND GUYS WHO BRANDS MORE(prefer designer labels) AND WHY DO YOU SAY SO?
UTI SAYS: Habah ! Ladies Na!!!!! Hehehehe. Gucci bag,Lego bag , Victoria secret pant! Eheheheh. Women love to drop brand names a whole lot more than the vain low self esteemed men! Yep I believe a man has to have low self esteem to drop brand names except he is advertising that brand! Branding is really feminine. I don't know what it is about branding in girl world. But it's obviously a big deal. Lol. U see it all over their instagram and Twitter and facebook. Choi. Some even now buy knock offs just to fit in! Na wah o! It's a world issue.

*WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST STYLE YOU'VE PULLED OFF?
UTI SAYS:Hahaha. a Jalabia that looked like a gown! Pure Couture !! A KINABUTTI outfit! Lovvvvved it!!!

*INDIVIDUALS THAT INSPIRES YOUR STYLE?
UTI SAYS: Me me me! Joking. Hahah.  ChidI Mokeme,David Beckham, Julius Agwu, Mai Atafo, Yomi Casual, ouch! , Ryan Seacrest, they got the classy man thing on lock down!!!
And there you have it UTI NWANCHUKWU on FAB STYLE 101meets with ATHENA
For his FAB STYLE ratings he gets our 10/10.
Now for those of you who wanna be or look like UTI,it not possible to be UTI but very FAB possible to be like him.
*Be on dreadlocks, that's a key possession,if you looking forward to finding him on low cuts....nah nah nooo you should go to a Buddhist temple and pray for a miracle. lolz.
* Love the AFRICAN MAN STYLE,be inspired and love the africa style go trend lock on you african prints.
*This is my sincere advice don't be a BORE,uti is full of live, has a great deal of humour and HAPPY Pharrell.
*Don't try being too excessive. Be real as much as possible.
*And lastly believe in yourself ,we all are FAB and we should preach it.
